No, two very different types of dogs. Both are herders but the Shepherds have a medium length coat and the Heelers have a short coat. There are also the Kelpies that come from Australia and are somewhat similar to the Queensland Heelers.

These are two completely different breeds. They are both bred for herding, but the Australian Shepherd is actually not from Australia. The Australian Cattle Dog is. The ACD is a much more aggressive and independant breed, who was bred with dingos a long time ago. This breed is very challenging to own, as they have an intense desire to herd everything, including children. They use their teeth alot to herd, so not usually a good breed for children.
The Australian Shepherd also has a great herding drive, but they can be a little more calm, and can be great with kids in a normal home environment.
Both breeds are scary smart.
