are australian shepherds easy to train basic commands?

Are they easier to teach basic commands like sit, stay, down, etc. to then other breeds? I have heard that they are very smart dogs.

Yes, they are. They are verrry smart dogs. I have had two (one died, and I have one now) and I never trained them at all, and they instinctively knew what to do when I said those commands. The only problem I have ever had is making them listen…My Aussie, Lexy, knows exactly when she's doing something wrong, but she does it anyway. Start training early, and it shouldnt be a problem. Like I said, I hardly trained mine because we live in the country and they dont need to know much, and I never command them (any of my three dogs) to do anything, they are just loyal friends….Good luck! Have fun with your puppy (if you're getting one)!

Aussies are very easy to train which is why many are very competitive in obedience and agility.

There is a difference between a dog that is easy to train and a dog that is smart. They are not the same thing. My hounds are extremely smart but training is challenging because I have to work really hard to motivate them.

yes, they are a bright breed of canine, however they are working dogs. Meaning they are bred for cattle herding. They are not the best for kids however they will try to herd them by nipping at their heels.

VERY smart. we inherited my father in laws Aussie 3 yrs ago.
Bandit was 10 yrs at the time and was going deaf. in the last 3 yrs he's learned basic hand signals (come, go, sit etc), but
he also knows if he doesn't watch us he doesn't have to do as we say/motion.
just for the record my father in law never taught Bandit anything other than housebreaking.
a little too smart if you ask me. very stubborn too.

Aussies are VERY smart dogs! They need MORE then basic commands to be happy. They want to "do" to "please"! If you get an aussie, be ready to go for long walks and possibly pick up a dog sport (such as agility or obedience)… :)

They are very smart and very easy to train. But this also means that they get bored very easily so they need stimulation on a regular basis.

They are very intelligent, sometimes smarter than their owners, so you have to stay ahead of them at all times.
They learn most any command very easily.
