My neighbor here in north Texas had one but it looked to me like she was uncomfortable in the heat. Maybe google it? Australia does have some very hot climate so maybe the dog I saw just wasn't accustomed to the heat. Her owners had moved here from Chicago. Also, you might call around to some vets and ask their opinion. You can probably find one that will give you some advice. Nice of you to think about it. I had a good friend whose kids rescued a St Barnard (spelling?) when they lived in Houston and the dog suffered so much it had to finally be put down. Broke the kids heart and I'm sure the dog wasn't to excited about it either.
References :
I have no source to back this up, but I'm guessing that since it's an AUSTRALIAN Sheperd, and Australia gets pretty hot, then yes, they out to be fine. Just a guess though. I'd try looking them up on the net and doing a little research prior to buying/adoptiong one if you're seriously looking into it.
References :
http://www.australianshepherds.org/

Yes, although they are not originally from Australia, they do live there. I would assume that by that they would be able to tolerate it.
Permitting there is adequate shade as well though.
References :
Air conditioning is a great invention.
Between water, shade, air conditioning, and NOT shaving the coat (as fur keeps dogs both warm and cool) an Aussie should be fine in a warmer area.
There's far more things to worry about in deciding if an Aussie is right for you or not than just the average temperature of where you live.

Add:
whiplash4ever- Australian Shepherds were (ironically) actually bred in the United States and not Australia though i'm sure there are Australian Shepherds living in Australia.

Yes. There is one down the street from me. But she does not live 'outside'. She lives with her family in an air conditioned house.

No dog in hot states such as Florida should be outside for a prolonged amount of time. The heat here is deadly.
