How big do Australian shepherds get ?

im wondering because Im looking at getting a dog, and i had an australian shepherd when I was little, but I don't remember how big it got.

Females typically get 40-60 pounds, and males 50-70.

Please do NOT buy into the "mini" or "toy" ideas, as another posters stated. "Minis" are not recognized, and are understandard dogs bred by backyard breeders. They are also often mixed breeds.

The average height is around 2 foot 6 inches. Fully grown. Good luck with getting a new Australaian shepherd they take quite a lot of training.

The Australian Shepherd can come in two sizes: the standard Australian Shepherd is around 18-23 inches in height, and weighs in at around 40-75 pounds. The miniature Australian Shepherd is around 14-18 inches high and around 20-40 pounds in weight. The miniature Australian Shepherd is simply a smaller version of the standard,

The preferred height for males is 20-23 inches, females 18-21 inches. Quality is not to be sacrificed in favor of size. Measuring from the breastbone to rear of thigh and from top of the withers to the ground the Australian Shepherd is slightly longer than tall. Structure in the male reflects masculinity without coarseness. Bitches appear feminine without being slight of bone.

    Hope that helped

The standard is females 18-20 inches tall and the males 20-22 inches tall. Weight of females usually 45-55# and the males 50-65#. There are different sizes according to the parents but this is the typical size.

I’m kind of offended of your “backyard breeder” comment in regards to mini aussies… I did a lot of research to find a good breeder who was working on getting the miniature australian shepherd to become recognized, with a wonderful facitility, and love for the breed.

They do exist and they are wonderful dogs…

The mini is not right do not support people who do not breed to the standard.

  14. Great blog! Endless amounts of helpful info. We care for aussies in Southern Florida. Aussies are incredibly smart and hard working. They love to work all day then kick back with the family every night. We absolutely enjoy their company.

We have a full blooded blue Merle and hes about 70+lbs, we also have a red tri and she’s about 40lbs! I don’t think I’d get one if I lived in the city or town cause they are more of a livestock dog and like to herd animals. As far as minis or toys go I think their useless but would prolly do good as a city house pet!
