my Miniature Australian Shepherds back leg?

for around 3 months now my miniature australian shepherd has had a problem with his back legs, one or the other every few weeks. he lifts up his leg and he stands like a tri pod. this morning he walked on 3 legs which i was shocked. does anyone know if this runs in their breed or what could be wrong? he is the happiest little dog and never shows any emotions but joy so its hard to tell when hes hurt

Could be anything from Arthritis or dysplasia. I believe the australian shepherds are prone to this. Check out the articles below for some references:

a lot of purebreds have problems with joints, especially arthritis,
    take it to a vet

The vet can help you with this.

We can’t possibly diagnose your dog over the internet.

Hopefully the long delay in seeking treatment will not result in the situation being permanent.

OK…you mean your MUTT/MONGREL is crippled as well as puppymilled junk?
    Geeeee,what a surprise.
That thing is NOT a breed!

Betcha a dollar it's bad knees. Maybe hips.
It needs an X-ray for final diagnosis;not asking strangers-on-line.
