What do you think about Australian shepherds as a pet?
They are good dogs, provided they have a job. If they don't have a job, they tend to get hyperactive and develop problems. If you have a lot of room for the dog to run and an active lifestyle, as well as plenty of time to spend training and working with the dog, they can be great pets.
I know of a breeder and this is what some of her dogs were used for:
-1 is a herder, brings the cows in, another brings sheep in.
2 are nursemaids- they clean and babysit for the baby wild animals at a zoo. currently 5 deer, a bobcat, a tiger, and a lynx all think they are actually dogs and whine for their "mother" dog whenever they see her.
-1 is used as a retriever for hunting, but he isn't the greatest at it.

you can not be a lazy person and have one. They are a herding dog and need allot of exercise and training. If you can provide that then yes they make a great dog.

Wonderful pets. They need a lot of attention and MOST need a lot of activity… but like any animal they have personalities all their own and do what they want.
I got mine expecting him to be super active but he would get bored playing fetch or other activities after ten minutes or so usually either laying down to relax or running back to the door to go inside… so aside from long walks and occasional fetch… his favorite activity is to cuddle with me on the couch! He is easily the most loving dog I've ever had… not sure if that's standard but he has to follow me everywhere so be prepared to have him as your fuzzy friendly shadow.
They are also really furry and need lots of brushing (especially in the summer) and very thorough checks for ticks because it's really hard to find them in all that fur.
And when you are at work have something for him/her to focus on, chew toys are good and maybe little stuffed animals to play with.
They are very smart creatures and are capable of expressing a variety of emotions so make sure you take the time to figure out what he/she wants, he will certainly be trying to tell you.
