What does it mean when my 11 yr old australian shepherd sleep alot?
Our 11 yr old Australian shepherd sleep alot , am I in for heartache or is it that she is is just getting older. This is our first Aussie, not sure what their life span is.
i had a mix between an aussie and a golden and she lived to be about 14. Now with that old age came a lot of problems with her back hips having dysplasia and arthritis to where she could barely get up on her own much less walk around a lot. I finally convinced my mother that it would be better for all of us if we put her down, but up until the end she slept a lot and was very coherent as to what was going on around her. I wouldnt worry too much, but if you want peace of mind, take her to get a head to tail check up at your vet. They will lay everything out for you, including which meds to start her on. Also, i recommend getting Glucosomine for dogs, and using a steady regiment of that. That will make it way easier on the joints and give them a lot more energy. Hope that was helpful.

Umm…yeah, it may be that she is getting older. You need to post this in the Dog forum.

11 is pretty old for a dog, but aussie's are a medium breed- so they live longer than the big breeds like Huskies. My Husky lived to be 26, but he wasn't very active past 15. My advice would be to take her to the vet for a checkup just to settle your mind and then enjoy the quieter years with her:-)

She is probably hitting the juice a little hard before she calls it a night…keep the liquor and hard drugs away from her…for pete's sake send your dog to rehab

keep in mind with any breed that the "average life span" is not necessarily the age your dog will live to be. is your dog a good weight for her size? if not try feeding her less food/better diet (no table scraps). sleeping a lot could just be her getting older and slowing down but it could also be something that only your vet could tell you. if she does have a heath problem it's best to find out as soon as possible.
