What is the temperment of Cattle Dogs or Australian Shepherds?

We are considering buying one.

Australian Shepherds and Cattle Dogs are actually two different breeds. The Aussie is a very high energy dog who needs something to do. They can be great family dogs and I actually have a mix who is the gentlest dog I have ever known. Cattle Dogs are another matter. They are not usually good with children-they try to herd and actually bite heels, like they were bred to do. They are much more difficult to train, and absolutely need to have a job to do-every day.
My ACD is never allowed to go near children-she sees them as cattle and they move "funny", which spooks her. She has also caused us to begin learning about agility and herding, as she will make us nuts if she has nothing to do.

If you don't have quite alot of time to devote to your dog, and have children, I would not suggest the Cattle Dog. if you were to get an Aussie, I would suggest you find a reputable breeder who will match the dog up with your life and take it back at any time if things don't work out.

they are usually very hyper, and have a lot of energy. They are working dogs bred to work all day long and are happiest doing just that. If you have a large yard or some acreage for them to do a lot of running they are real good pets, they are not apartment dogs.

They are very very active dogs, no good for apartments. They can and often become very protective of their masters. You become their herd. They sometimes try to herd your or your friends.
Remember they are live stock working dogs. I have had them for many years and to control them in a town and yard environment, you must be very carefully that you do not loose control, they are always testing you trying to become the Alpha dog.
    Good luck

They are one of the smartest breeds out there. They are really active and need a good deal of exercise every day. Plan on going to the dog park often.

Also they will herd anything and everything, other animals, people, etc…

Australian Shepherd Dogs are extremely well tempered. They are very obedient, loyal and EXCELLENT WITH CHILDREN. Good judgement on your part for considering this breed. They work on command very well. Don't hesitate in getting one if you are truly considering a good natured dog in all aspects.

They are wonderful dogs. The are very good with kids and they are quick learners. I would have to say that my brother's Australian Cattle dog is the smartest dog I have ever encountered.
If you have the time to spend with the dog and you are able to work with him, you will be rewarded with a companion that is more intelligent than most humans and more loyal than your best friend.

    Both are very smart dogs.

Aussies are not as "hard" as Cattle Dogs.

I would recommend looking into an Aussie….great dogs! I don't have one, so it is not that I am pushing one just 'cause….

I know many, many Aussie breeders and owners and have several as agility students
