what's so great about Australian Shepherds?
I've never met one personally, but I know they're very popular.
If you have one, can you tell me what you love about them?
What is the trait in them that won't find in any other dog?
Thanks
thanks, so they sound a little like german shepherds, as far as the smarts and protective-ness.
Do they ever get agressive? Are they known as family dogs?
Thanks again-need lots of info.
I have an aussie mix who is the sweetest and smartest dog I have ever known. I don't even have to tell her my commands-she knows what I want already. She is motherly, protective, nurturing, cuddly, well-behaved with strangers, completely trained and the most perfect dog I have ever had. You won't be sorry if you add an aussie to your life!

They are pretty much awesome. I have an Australian Kelpie, which is very similar to an Australian Shepherd. They are very loving dogs who live to protect you. They are also really friendly and cute.

I have aussies, actually I have 6 of them. They are wonderful dogs. They are personality plus and intelligence plus also. You can teach them anything and they are willing to learn. They are great housedogs or outside. They love being around livestock, particularly horses. They are very good guard dogs and protect their place and on top of all of that, they are beautiful dogs too.

I love the way they look and their agility and frisbee catching abilities. I don't have one but I think I might like to have one. I'd like to have one with bicolored eyes. The only drawback is all that hair, you have to keep it brushed and it attracts dirt.

They are very easy to train. I bought one for my husband, it took only 2 weeks to housebreak her. They are also very intelligent. We we ride our horses our Aussie always tags along. She also entertains our children( she plays frisbee with them all the time). My husband never owned a Aussie before this one, now he claims he will always have a Aussie in his life.

Great overall dogs. Speed, brains, agility, protective and family oriented. The only drawback I see to them is their high energy level isn't compatible with everyone. Mine even goes duck hunting and upland birds as well. (He is a mix though….we think there is a little golden in there)

I don't own an Aussie, but have many friends and students(being into training and showing dogs) that own, raise and show them.
They are GREAT dogs.Next to the Shelties I have had, and the Border Collie, which I have now, they are for me #3 of list of dog breeds I would own.
They are extremely intelligent, very "biddable" (meaning they WANT to work with and for you) and easy to train. A "dog dog"….athletic and durable and a good size that can go jogging, hiking, camping. They are great companions, want to be part of the family, are protective.
As with any breed of dog, individuals can vary, and how you raise and train them make a diffference of what the ending result is.
Some are more active than others, some are more sensitive than others, a few can be pushy, and I have seen a very few that are aggressive…but not near as many as I have toy breeds of dogs! At the big, annual ASCA shows where there may be 500 of them, I have never seen a growl or fight though, and I have been to about 5 of these national events over the past 15 years or so.
I would not say they have a single trait that is totally unique to the breed, but the temperament traits they share with other herding dogs are a bit tempered, more even keel
